Instagram Post Size: what it does

Instagram posts no longer have to be square. A 1080 × 1080 image uses a 1:1 aspect ratio, 1080 × 1350 uses 4:5 and 1080 × 1440 uses 3:4. Different posting methods and connected publishing services may treat formats differently, so checking the final in-app preview remains important.

Common social image dimensions

UsePixel dimensionsAspect ratio
Instagram square1080 × 10801:1
Instagram portrait1080 × 13504:5
Instagram tall photo1080 × 14403:4
Story / Reels cover1080 × 19209:16
TikTok profile output400 × 4001:1

The chosen feed ratios describe exported image dimensions; Instagram can use different thumbnail crops in profile or discovery surfaces.

Pick square, 4:5 or taller framing intentionally

Square 1080 × 1080 photos offer a balanced, familiar feed composition. Portrait 1080 × 1350 uses a 4:5 frame; a taller 3:4 preparation size can also make sense for some photo publishing paths. Publishing interfaces and thumbnail crops can differ, so check the in-app preview.

When a feed image must remain legible in a profile grid, keep captions and key elements near the middle. The feed image and the cropped profile thumbnail are separate surfaces; a single file cannot guarantee the identical appearance in both.

Plan square, portrait and tall feed posts

Choose a feed preset in Social Presets: 1080 × 1080 square, 1080 × 1350 portrait, or 1080 × 1440 tall image. View the result before posting, especially if your subject sits near the crop boundaries.

Before you download: limits and trade-offs

The 4:5 and 3:4 ratios do not show identically in all Instagram surfaces. Feed crops, profile thumbnails and uploads by third-party publishing tools may differ. Use the preview as a design aid, not a guarantee of a fixed on-platform rendering.

Quick answers for this image task

What is the classic Instagram portrait ratio?

4:5, for example 1080 × 1350 pixels.

Does choosing 1080 × 1440 force every app to show 3:4?

No. Platform handling can change and may crop or adapt the upload.
